| A Few Beautiful Colors Over the years, I’ve noticed something that seems almost backwards… That sometimes, the more choices we give young children, the harder it can be for them to begin. That children often do their best creative work when they’re given a thoughtful starting place rather than endless choices. A table of overflowing colors can be exciting at first, but it can also bring a lot of deciding. Which color? which combination? What should I make? Maybe they decide to sort them rather than make something. Sometimes creativity flourishes when we quietly simplify…. A small collection of harmonious colors can invite them to begin creating instead of spending time deciding. As I’ve been working with our felt assortments, I’ve been reminded of the geometric felt balls many children love to make. A warm color collection creates a completely different feeling than a cool color collection, even when the pattern is exactly the same. The materials gently guide the experience without limiting the child’s imagination.A few carefully chosen colors can be enough to inspire dozens of beautiful possibilities. This has become one of my guiding principles, whether I’m choosing felt, paints, or drawing materials. Children don’t necessarily need every color at once. Often, they need a thoughtful starting place and the freedom to explore… Then when a new color arrives! Everything is new and exciting again! This is a big reason why we sell singles of most of our supplies. Some of the most imaginative work comes from a child with a handful of materials and plenty of uninterrupted time. Wishing you a week filled with simple materials, meaningful work, and the quiet joy of watching your children’s ideas unfold. -Chris ![]() ![]() The Mood of Color. Color affects the mood of a project before a single stitch is made. The same geometric felt ball sewn in warm colors feels completely different from one sewn in cool colors. The pattern hasn’t changed, only the colors.Warm colors bring energy, sunshine, and movement. Cool colors feel peaceful, calming, and connected to nature. Working with a few colors based on mood can be a great starting place. |
