At Paper Scissors Stone, our work is rooted in a deep love for childhood, creativity, and the natural world. Waldorf education has long celebrated the healing, humanizing power of painting, drawing, music, handwork, and imaginative play. Our in‑house artists and former Waldorf educators thoughtfully test and curate every art and school supply we offer, ensuring children receive the richest possible artistic experience.

Where We Began
Our founder, Annette Park, was a Waldorf mother of five with a profound appreciation for Waldorf education and the communities that sustain it. In 1996, she brought her entrepreneurial spirit and artistic sensibility together to create Paper Scissors Stone.
Six months later, our first catalog was mailed out — a small but beautifully curated collection of high‑quality items chosen for the Waldorf home and classroom. Annette also championed American‑made alternatives to beloved Waldorf staples, introducing our own Stone brand paints, natural‑fiber brushes, locally sourced wool, and a wide selection of locally produced main lesson books.

A New Chapter
After Annette’s passing in 2016, Paper Scissors Stone found a new steward in Philothea Bezin — our greatest cheerleader and a lifelong believer in the value, history, and intention behind this work. Philothea purchased the business in 2018 to strengthen its vision and continue its service to the Waldorf community.
Her entrepreneurial insight and community spirit run deep. She helped conceive and establish Pleasant Ridge Waldorf School and remains active in local initiatives that nurture creativity, connection, and the well‑being of children. Her leadership embodies the friendship, care, and dedication at the heart of every thriving community.

Our Vision Today
We proudly serve schools, parents, homeschoolers, artists, and crafters with products made in a non‑toxic, sustainable way. From the beginning, it was clear that certain essential Waldorf materials were no longer being produced in the United States. We believe it is vital for the economic realm supporting Waldorf and Waldorf‑inspired learning to be rooted here as much as possible.
We continue to honor the whole‑child philosophy of Waldorf education — how truth, beauty, and goodness are reflected in the materials themselves, and how these values weave into daily life. We love our products. We roll wool, pack paint, cut felt, dye silk, and, best of all, we play. We explore, experiment, and rediscover the sense of wonder that comes from creating colorful things with beautiful tools.
Growing With the Movement
Our catalog has grown into this online store, and the Waldorf movement has blossomed alongside us — expanding into Waldorf charter schools, academies, homeschools, Montessori programs, Forest Schools, and many other Waldorf‑inspired learning communities. We are grateful to be part of this like‑minded network dedicated to protecting the sanctity of childhood.

Rooted in Community
Our warehouse remains in the small town of Viroqua, Wisconsin, nestled in the rolling hills of the Driftless Region. We’re just steps from the main street and a short walk from Pleasant Ridge Waldorf School and Youth Initiative High School. You can also find a selection of our supplies at Ewetopia’s retail fiber shop.
Paper Scissors Stone may be small, but we have a big heart. We honor our roots in the Waldorf community — the schools that inspired our founding, the people who supported our growth, and the many hands that have helped us expand beyond Waldorf education while staying true to our values.
Our team shares in decision‑making and prioritizes the well‑being of our employees. Every one of us has been touched by Waldorf education as a student, teacher, or parent. And we consider all of YOU — teachers, parents, artists, crafters, and suppliers — in every choice we make as a small business navigating an ever‑changing world.
We strive for fair prices, reasonable shipping, responsive communication, and the thoughtful service that comes from more than twenty‑five years of experience supporting families on their journey in art, imagination, and meaningful learning.
